For the recycled art show this year, I decided to make a table for two from recycled lumber. Second Use just got a bus load of 2×3 used decking, and I bought 10 eight-footers for this project.

The 2×3’s were wet and had a thick layer of paint. After drying in the garage for a week, I started sanding them down. This created an interesting look.

I prototyped the stool from old 2×3’s. This resulted in a small stool, with a low back. The stool is a little higher than most stools which makes it more of a transitional stool. Cutting the back legs at the right angle made it possible to create a backrest out of the same piece of wood.  The table is also a a little higher than most tables so it fits well with the stools. I like the tables longer and not too deep. So, if you sit on opposite sides of the long ends, it creates an intimate setting. You can also sit on the short sides, which creates more of a traditional spacing.

The end-result is something more elegant than the furniture from 2×4.

2011 in review

January 3, 2012

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Syndey Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 14,000 times in 2011. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 5 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

The Modern Balcony Chair

June 18, 2011

The 2×4 chair was purposefully designed very solid and heavy. At the same time this became a downside for places that ask for a little more elegance. Enter: The skinny version of the 2×4 chair all made out of 1×4′s. It is light weight and strong!

One extra board at the bottom prevents it from flexing and keeps it light. I also played around with the angle of the back which is now simply 30 degrees and easier to cut on the miter saw. This chair only has 4 boards on the back spaced out 1/8″ which makes the chair feel lighter.

This small chair lends itself perfectly for small spaces such as a balcony.

Plan will follow later this year.

And BTW, Yes  these are also for sale. Contact me for details.
